E-mail
- Spampal - Tiny little proxy app that sits infront of your mail client of choice and filters out spam with bayesian filtering and domain/ip checking against spam lists. Sits in the systray and works inconspicously.
Text Tools
- Ultraedit - Text editor with macros, synatax highlighting etc.
- Textpad
- Windows Grep - Very handy tool, expecially for trawling those mIRC logs
Programming
- Activestate Komodo - IDE/Debugger for Perl,TCL,Python. This is very useful if you write CGI scripts. Site also has win32 ports of the languages.
- Tortoise CVS - Windows shell integrated CVS client.
Disk/File Management
- Duplic8 - Software to scan your drives for files which are identical but a different name. Can work just on file size or also do an MD5 sum. Useful for finding duplicate mp3s etc.
- Beyond Compare - This checks to see if 2 directories are in sync and if not what the differences are. It's less geared up to finding random duplicates than Duplic8 though.
- Totally Commander - Filemanager type thing, very useful if you have lots of dirs that you're always using - quite customizable as well.
- Diskspace Explorer - Lists files / sizes, helps weed out those huge files you never knew existed.
Remote Admin
- Putty - Small, functional SSH client.
- Real VNC - Windows VNC Client/Server.
Communication
- Trillian - If you must IM this is a superior client.
Multimedia
- DVD Shrink - Lets you back up your DVDs really easily :-) handy bits are being able to drop other languages and reduce the extras quality to keep the main feature at the highest quality
- DScaler - Best TV app out there, forget all your Hauppage stuff
- Tag and Rename - ID3 Tag editor, File renamer, play list editor etc. Can get information from various online sources to fill in track names automatically
